Oh Boldest Star

When Chantal Lepage, my songwriting partner, presented me with the French text she called “Comme Je T’aime” I was moved by that still-girlish crush she was expressing for the man she’d slept with for decades.

I understood it perfectly. Flooded as we are with songs about the spurious affairs of hot-to-trot teenagers, the truth remains: Old lovin’ is good lovin.’ But you have to get old to figure that out. Until then, here’s a song.

Oh Boldest Star

I watch my honey when he sleeps,

Prayin’ with all my soul to keep

That face the way I see it yet—

As handsome as the day we met.

How precious is the loyal heart

That keeps hangin’ around, that never parts.

That’s him, my love, my only beau,

A heart for me and for our young, oh

Oh star so bright, oh starry light,

Boldest star in the summer sky

I wish I may, I wish I might

Just tell him what I feel tonight!

Because of him my soul has grown, his

Tender love has watered me and made me strong.

I love my darlin’, heart and soul,

So why can’t I tell ‘im so?

The words just never come out right

They tumble out clumsy, sounding trite

But love grows deeper nonetheless

And more desirous, I confess . . .

Oh star so bright, oh starry light,

Boldest star in the summer sky

I wish I may, I wish I might

Really tell him what I feel tonight!

Aw, to heck with all the searching soul.

Why should I tell when I can show?

So wake up, baby, and turn around,

Cause somethin’s good is goin’ down, oh

Oh star so bright, oh starry light,

Boldest star in the summer sky

I wish I may, I wish I might

Really show him what I feel tonight!

Let me show him what I’m feelin’ tonight.
